Realizing that your values don’t align with those of the organization where you are a leader is sobering. What now? There are a few options.
- Empower yourself to influence change. As a leader, you hold the power to initiate discussions about company values. This is not just an opportunity but a moment of empowerment, where you can guide the organization towards a transformation that resonates with the values that matter to you. Change is driven by people who speak up and advocate for it. Can you propose a shift in values that aligns with your beliefs?
- Embrace the potential for growth and learning during transition. You may find yourself in a leadership position where immediate changes are not feasible, and it’s not the right time to switch companies. After weighing the positives (such as a good salary, flexible work arrangements, and better opportunities in the future), you might find that the conflicts between your values and the company are manageable. Use this time to work towards your career aspirations and learn from the experience.
- Look for a new company. If you’ve tried to influence some level of change and you know that it’s doubtful that your company will change enough that you can reconcile your life’s work with your personal values, it may be time to consider a career move. Sometimes, a lateral career move makes sense, and this might be one of them. You can prioritize your core values as you research potential companies. During interviews, you can ask the interviewers to describe the company’s values and culture and provide examples of how they do important things.
Remember, you are in control of your leadership role. It’s a challenge when your values no longer align with your company, but as a leader, you have the power to shape your role in a way that aligns with your values. You have the ability to lead in a way that is true to your beliefs.
